From the Jet Set Blog

  • The Power of Social Media: Latest Website

    Greetings from Burbank, CA!

Well, Jet Set At & Design had passed a milestone: we got our first client and website development project through Facebook, thanks to my good friend, Helen Brahms of Cruise Planners, who spotted a plea for help on Facebook.

A friend from Petaluma, CA posted that she needed help putting together a website. Helen called me and I called her friend. After a quick phone call I determined that Janette wanted to get up and running quickly for not a great deal of money.

Jet Set Art and Design’s intro package of a 3-page WordPress install for $150 fit the bill. Of course, she needed some customization (look and feel, gallery, etc.) which cost a little more, but that basic install of WordPress allows her to expand her site whenever she needs to.

Did I mention I’m a huge fan of WordPress? It really makes things so simple for a website owner. As much as I’d love to charge for maintenance, most things that need to be done can be done BY ANYONE. Add content, remove or change it with a few clicks.

In any case, I think Janette has got a pretty good site (americantelephonestore.com) to work with and now I’ve experienced that social network thing that I’ve read about but which had not touched me personally. I’m not a fanatic about it, (I’ve got other things to do besides hanging out of Facebook) but it really can be a good extended network. This bit of business still required the intercession of a real, flesh and blood colleague (Helen), but it’s still gratifying to have landed a (satisfied) client through Facebook.

What Kind of Web Site?

Static of Dynamic?

Depending on your needs you may prefer a static site (the content of which are "hard coded" into the pages) or a "dynamic" site—one which uses a database to store all content. A WordPress site is an example of a "dynamic" site. Its admin section allows the user to add, delete or change content on each page. The new information is updated in the database. If you need to make frequent updates, a dynamic site may be for you.
